How does the thyroid function and how can it cause different things to happen as we are losing weight?
Insulin controls a lot of what the thyroid does. The pancreas produces insulin and if we need the Ideal Protein program, we are more than likely insulin resistant. A lot of our receptors, cells and even pancreas aren’t doing what they are supposed to be doing. It all ties back to our thyroid.
Hypothyroidism– (underactive thyroid) is a condition in which your thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough of certain important hormones
Hyperthyroidism– (overactive thyroid) is a condition in which your thyroid gland produces too much of a hormone
What are some of the symptoms of thyroid issues?
Symptoms include hair loss, hair dryness, thinning eyebrows, weight gain, cold feet/hands, skin irritations, hair growth in strange places, neck measurements go up and down, sudden rosacea, eczema, frail nails, and weight loss is super slow
How would you coach someone who came with some of these symptoms?
Your body is telling you something is wrong by exhibiting these symptoms, you need to see an endocrinologist.
Why should you see an endocrinologist?
An endocrinologist is a specialist in this area. You may be borderline on paper, but you will feel like it is really off and your primary physician may not see that you need help. Is your primary care doctor actually doing a full thyroid panel? Likely not. Endocrinologists are looking at your full panel much more closely and in depth.
When you are losing weight, how often should your medication be monitored?
If you are already aware of thyroid issues before you start Ideal Protein, you should make sure that it is all in check before you start the program. Once on the program, you should have your thyroid checked every 15-20 lbs. of weight loss. Also know that your weight loss will be slower than a client without thyroid issues.
What are adrenals and how do they contribute to the thyroid?
Adrenals produce hormones that help regulate your metabolism, immune system, blood pressure, response to stress and other essential functions. Adrenals can be burned through with high stress jobs or with rough patches in people’s lives. Adrenals create cortisol, which will throw off your thyroid medication. Encourage patients to take time for them and relax. Sometimes thyroid medication needs to be adjusted and should be checked every 3-4 months.
How can PCOS be helped by Ideal Protein?
PCOS is linked to insulin resistance. You may not be a type 2 diabetic, but part of your body is functioning as a Type 2 diabetic creating insulin resistance. Ideal Protein can help you lose weight and begin to regulate your insulin levels and eventually your menstrual cycles.
How often should medications be checked and adjusted?
Medications should be checked monthly for the first three months while losing weight. You should be in constant contact with your doctor.
